In 1973, Susan Schmitt began her martial arts training, becoming one of the first women students in the United States.  Mrs. Schmitt was a formidable opponent in the sparring ring and a supportive and welcoming presence inside the karate club.  In 1980, she was promoted to the rank of Black Belt.  Mrs. Schmitt won many awards competing in forms and sparring throughout the 1970's and '80's.  However, her biggest accomplishment is that she has touched the lives of thousands of children and adults throughout her martial arts career.  She is truly an inspiration for women and children in martial arts.

Mrs. Schmitt is a certified black belt instructor who specializes in teaching the youth martial arts programs at the Dubuque Karate Club.  She has been teaching children's classes for over 40 years.  It has been through her genuine love of children and her passion for teaching martial arts, which as attributed to the successful advancement of her students' leadership.  She encourages, motivates, and guides each individual child to become their personal best inside and outside of the Karate Club.  Mrs. Schmitt brings energy, compassion and encouragement to her students.  She is dedicated and committed to her students, and appreciates and celebrates each child as an individual.  Consequently, Mrs. Schmitt is adored by her legions of Little Dragons and Karate Kids.
