Understanding the 14 Attitudes
by Mr. Robert Weidenbacher, Sam Dan
The students are just finishing the physical part of their ranking test. They are now sitting down and getting themselves ready for the oral part of the test which will be given by Master Schmitt and the panel. One of many question that Master Schmitt will ask is can you tell me the Fourteen Attitude requirements to master Tang Soo Do? The first student stands up and says yes sir and then starts off confidently, then slows down as he or she tries to remember the last four attitude requirements. The next student is asked if he can help the first student. He or she stands up and says, "Yes sir" and goes through the fourteen attitudes in a flash. As I listen to this question and how it was answered I wonder if the students understand how important it is to understand the fourteen attitudes and how they will help in our training.Let's look at the fifth attitude which states you should practice the basic techniques all the time. How often do you here the students talking after class about doing the same old blocks and kicks over and over? But do they realize that if they do not have a good foundation to build on; their focus, distance and judgment won't be there when they need it. This can only be accomplished by constant practicing. A student that practices the basics all the time will be able to understand and prefect the more advanced techniques.
Just think about the early years of school when you where taught basic math and spelling. How often did you go over and over the basics? The reason for that was so you would be able to build a good foundation for later learning in school. If you didn't understand your basics then how will you be able to advance to more difficult problem solving or understand new words?
How about number 14. Cleanliness is required after training. Keep yourself and your surroundings clean. After working out, pick up the equipment lying around and put it away. This shows respect for the Dojang. If your Do Bokh is dirty or wrinkled you should automatically wash or iron it without having to be told. If you don't keep yourself clean it sends a signal that you don't care about yourself or have the respect to follow the rules and traditions. You need to remember that what you do and how you act reflects on you, your club and your instructor.
As you can see, just to memorize the code is not enough, but you need to understand and follow it. This will help you to better master Tang Soo Do.
