Class Procedures

When entering the dojang one must bow. If a class is in progress do not interfere with it in any way. Walk to the front side of the Dojang and wait for the instructor to bow you in.

When the instructor instructs you to line up, do so quickly and quietly. Line up according to your Tang Soo Do rank and seniority. The higher ranking member will be on the right. The instructor will take a position at the front and center of the class.

The highest ranking member in the class will call the following commands to start class:

  Cha Ryut------------------------------ Attention
Kukgi Bae Rye------------------------- Salute the flag
  Ba Ro -------------------------------- Return
  Ahn Jo ------------------------------- Sitting position
  Muk Yum ------------------------------ Meditation
  Ba Ro -------------------------------- Return
Kwan Chang Nim E Kyung Yet ----------- Bow to Grand Master
Sah Bum Nim E Kyung Yet -------------- Bow to Master
Yu Dan E Kyung Yet ------------------- Bow to Instructor (if Master is not present)

Proper respect and discipline shall be maintained at all times and Tang Soo Do rituals should be followed in a uniform manner.

At the end of class after the students bow to instructor, all members will say clearly, "Ko Map Sum Ni Da" (thank you, sir) to the instructor.

The class instructor or senior member then calls, "Five Codes of Tang Soo Do". The entire class will recite the five codes together loudly and clearly:

  1. Loyalty to country
  2. Obedience to parents
  3. Honor friendship
  4. No retreat in battle
  5. In fighting, choose with sense and honor
Next, all members will recite the American Tang Soo Do Code of Conduct:

  • I shall seek truth,
  • Develop my highest moral character,
  • Strive for humility,
  • Love my country,
  • Sacrifice myself for justice,
  • Contribute, by example, to the acceptance of Tang Soo Do as the most genuine of the martial arts,
  • Develop my endurance, and
  • Value confidence and peace of mind.
Then all members should call, "Tang Soo" with the right hand raised.

The Dojang must be cleaned by the students. When leaving the Dojang, bow. If another class is beginning, do not interfere with it in any way.
