1973: Susan Schmitt began her martial arts training, becoming one of the first women students in the United States.
1980: She was promoted to the rank of Black Belt.
Mrs. Schmitt is a certified black belt instructor who specializes in teaching the children’s martial arts program at the Dubuque Karate Club. She has been teaching children classes for over 25 years.
It has been through her genuine love of children as well as the martial arts which has attributed to the successful advancement of her students leadership achievements.
Over the years, Mrs. Schmitt has been recognized for her achievements in the martial arts.

Mrs. Schmitt’s accomplishments begin with several awards in which she has earned through competition in forms & Sparring throughout the 1970’s and 80’s. Additional honors are as follows:

1984 ATKI Student of the Year
1986 ATKI Instructor of the Year
1998 ATKI Instructor of the Year
1999 ATKI Instructor of the Year
2000 ATKI Instructor of the Year.
2002 Appointed head of the Dubuque Karate Children’s program.
